Recommended PC configuration for Grand Theft Auto VI

Three suggested builds

You don't have to match the spec sheet exactly. The combinations below are the simplest paths to each tier with parts that are widely available in the US, UK, and EU as of mid-2026. Prices are approximate and exclude monitor and peripherals.

Budget — around $1,200

• CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600 (6-core / 12-thread, AM5)
• GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060 8 GB or AMD RX 7700 XT 12 GB (the AMD card has more VRAM headroom for VI's textures)
• RAM: 16 GB DDR5-5600 (2×8 GB)
• Storage: 1 TB NVMe Gen3 SSD
• PSU: 650 W 80 Plus Gold
• Case + cooler: Mid-tower with stock cooler is fine for the 7600

This build will hit the Recommended tier at 1080p–1440p with high settings. It will not push 4K Ultra. Plan to upgrade the GPU in 2027 if you want Ultra later.

Mid-range — around $2,000

• CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D (Rockstar games have historically loved 3D V-Cache)
• GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4070 SUPER 12 GB or RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16 GB
• RAM: 32 GB DDR5-6000 CL30 (2×16 GB)
• Storage: 2 TB NVMe Gen4 SSD
• PSU: 850 W 80 Plus Gold
• Cooler: 240 mm AIO or a high-end air cooler

This is the sweet spot. Comfortable 1440p Ultra at 60 fps, stretches into 4K at high settings. 32 GB RAM and the 2 TB SSD give you headroom for the install plus mods on the older Rockstar titles.

Enthusiast — $3,500 and up

• GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4090 24 GB or wait for RTX 5080 / 5090 if available
• RAM: 64 GB DDR5-6000 (2×32 GB)
• Storage: 4 TB NVMe Gen5 SSD
• PSU: 1000 W 80 Plus Platinum
• Cooler: 360 mm AIO
• Display target: 4K 120 Hz OLED or 1440p 240 Hz

This is overkill for VI alone. It is not overkill if you also play Cyberpunk 2077 with full path tracing, intend to use VR, or hold the build for five years. The RTX 4090 is currently the only consumer card that consistently holds 4K Ultra at 60 fps in modern AAA.

Storage and SSD requirements

GTA V was 65 GB at launch on PC. RDR2 was 150 GB. GTA VI on PC is going to be larger than RDR2. Plan for 150–200 GB just for the install, and add 20–30 GB for the day-one patch.

A spinning HDD is not going to work for VI on PC. Modern Rockstar engine builds use SSD-only streaming and the install will refuse to boot from a mechanical drive. SATA SSD is the floor; NVMe is the recommended path. PCIe Gen5 isn't required and the price premium isn't worth it for VI specifically.

Why a Steam Deck won't cut it

The Steam Deck has shipped two generations and the OLED model is competent at 720p / 30 fps for current AAA. GTA VI at 720p / 30 fps on the Deck is plausible, but only after the PC release ships, and only at minimum settings with significant resolution scaling. If portable GTA VI is your primary use case, expect to play at low quality, with frame drops in dense Vice City scenes. The Deck is a complement to a real rig, not a substitute.

Buy from authorized retailers only. Counterfeit PC components, especially CPUs and SSDs, are a real and growing problem on third-party marketplaces.

• United Kingdom: Overclockers UK, Scan, Amazon UK, CCL Online, Box.
• EU: Mindfactory and Alternate (Germany), LDLC (France), Caseking (Germany), Amazon DE/FR/IT.
• Canada: Canada Computers, Memory Express, Newegg Canada, Amazon Canada.
• India / SEA: MD Computers, Vedant Computers, ITDepot. Buy from authorized resellers; the grey market for GPUs is large here and warranty support is what you lose.

Pre-built systems from Falcon Northwest, NZXT BLD, Origin PC, and CyberPowerPC ship configured to roughly these tiers if you don't want to build. The premium over self-built is usually $200–$500 for the assembly and warranty.

When VI ships on console in November 2026, the PC version isn't out yet, which means you have time. Don't panic-buy hardware in October. Wait for the second-generation 50-series GPU pricing to settle if that's your tier.
