PS5 vs Xbox Series X vs PC: Which Version of GTA 6 Should You Buy?

Performance, mod support, exclusive content, and pricing across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC versions.

The cross-platform question for a Rockstar release is rarely about who has the best version on day one. It's about who has the best version on day three hundred, and what tradeoffs you're making to get there.

PS5

The PlayStation 5 is the platform Rockstar has historically led with. GTA V launched on PS3 and 360 first; GTA VI is being announced as a PS5 and Xbox Series day-one release. The PS5 is the platform most likely to be receiving the lead engineering attention, the most-tested build, and the cleanest controller integration.

If you own a PS5 and play with a controller, this is the obvious choice for launch.

Long-term tradeoffs: no mod support. Rockstar's console position is no mods, no community tooling, no graphics overhauls, no first-person camera fixes. The game you buy in week one is the game you're going to be playing in year three.

Xbox Series X

Mechanically the same conversation as the PS5. The Series X is a slightly more powerful console on paper, and historically Rockstar's Xbox build has matched or marginally exceeded the PlayStation version on raw frame rate. The Microsoft Store and Game Pass infrastructure is more flexible than PSN's — cloud saves, install management, and the ability to play the same game on a Series S in another room without re-buying.

Game Pass: don't expect GTA VI on Game Pass at launch. Rockstar releases historically take eighteen months minimum to land on subscription services, and the GTA series specifically has skipped Game Pass entirely outside of the older entries.

PC

The PC release of every modern Rockstar game has come three to twelve months after console. RDR2 took twelve months. GTA V took eighteen. The PC build has historically been the technical high-water mark — better lighting, more draw distance, higher frame rate, eventual mod support.

If you're a PC player, the question isn't whether you want the PC version. The question is whether you're willing to wait. If you are, the PC version will eventually be the best version. If you're not, you should buy the console version on launch and treat the PC version as a second purchase if you decide you want it.

So which one

  • If you have a PS5 or Series X and aren't a PC purist, buy on console at launch.
  • If you're a PC player and patient, wait. The PC version will be worth the wait.
  • If you're a PC player and impatient, buy on console for the campaign and decide about the PC version when it's announced.
  • If you don't have a console: it's 2026 and the price of a PS5 has come down. Buying a console for one game is more reasonable than it used to be.

What about PS4 / Xbox One

GTA VI is not coming to last-generation hardware. This was confirmed in the announcement. If you're on a PS4 or Xbox One, your options are upgrade or wait.

What about Switch / Steam Deck

Switch: not happening. The Switch 2 is more plausible but no announcement. Steam Deck: when the PC version ships, it will run on the Deck at lower settings and frame rates. It will not run on the Deck at launch because the Deck only runs PC games and the PC version is not at launch.

Summary

Buy on the console you already own at launch. Buy the PC version separately when it ships if you want the better-looking version and you want to mod the single-player. Don't buy a console specifically for GTA VI unless you were going to buy a console anyway. Don't buy a Steam Deck specifically for it.
